PONDSAFE forms a smooth, seamless and watertight finish with strong adhesion, good wear resistance and excellent water resistance. It contains no solvents, isocyanates or styrene and has been formulated specifically with aquatic environments in mind.
PONDSAFE has been developed specifically for ponds, koi ponds and other aquatic environments rather than adapted from a general-purpose industrial coating. The formulation has been designed with fish keepers and pond contractors in mind, with carefully selected resins, fillers and pigments to provide a fully cured, decorative and watertight surface suitable for permanent immersion.
PONDSAFE is a 65% solids, two-component water-based epoxy system designed to make application cleaner and more pleasant than many conventional resin coatings. It contains no solvents, polyurethane/isocyanates or styrene and uses a low-odour hardener, reducing exposure to unpleasant fumes during application while still delivering the durability expected from a high-performance epoxy coating.
The formulation has been developed to improve adhesion through careful binder selection and adhesion-promoting additives, helping the coating bond reliably to suitably prepared substrates. Laboratory pull-off testing recorded 3 MPa with 100% cohesive substrate failure, while additional testing demonstrated good abrasion resistance, scratch hardness, wet-scrub resistance, flexibility and resistance to cracking and blistering.
PONDSAFE has been engineered specifically for long-term exposure to water. The formulation uses a hydrophobic hardener and a tightly crosslinked polymer structure to improve water release and reduce water uptake. In laboratory testing, the coating passed ASTM D870 / ISO 2812-2 water-resistance testing with no observed failure and also showed good resistance to salt water and a broad range of chemicals.
Considerable attention has been given to substrate wetting, viscosity and sag resistance so that PONDSAFE applies smoothly by brush or medium-pile roller without excessive dragging. The formulation is naturally anti-sag and has an extended pot life to give the applicator more working time. Once cured, its smooth, closed surface helps reduce dirt pickup and makes routine cleaning of algae and organic growth easier.
PONDSAFE has been developed with input from fish keepers, pond owners and water-feature contractors, rather than as a generic industrial epoxy adapted for aquatic use. The formulation has been enhanced for flexibility, freeze/thaw stability, wear resistance and temperature cycling, helping it cope with the seasonal movement and environmental conditions that pond coatings experience throughout the year.
PONDSAFE offers a different balance of cost, appearance and practicality to liners or fibreglass. Its seamless coating follows complex shapes and contours without folds or joints, making it particularly useful for irregular pond designs. It can also be applied without specialist fibreglass installation, while providing a smooth, durable and easily maintained finish once fully cured.

Because PONDSAFE is applied as a liquid coating, it can follow corners, curves, steps and other irregular features without the folds or seams associated with sheet liners. New or highly porous substrates may require a clear primer coat, while existing surfaces should be clean, sound and properly keyed before application.
A great question. Liners, particularly box-weld, are probably the easiest solution but they are quite expensive and not well suited to irregular or intricate pond designs. Fibreglass is an excellent option for most pond shapes, but is expensive and not an easy DIY task. Good fibreglass applicators are difficult to find and subsequently in high demand. PONDSAFE is much cheaper than fibreglass and comparable with the lower end of box-weld liners. Importantly, it is an easy DIY option, so it can be applied according to the pond-owner’s timescale rather than the availability of an applicator.
Yes. PONDSAFE has been formulated to ensure excellent adhesion to damp substrates.
We have a standard range, including black, grey, stone, blue & green, but any colour is possible, subject to minimum volume requirements.
